If it just smokes, you may not need a complete rebuild, especially if it sat for several years. Usually the babbit starts to pound before the engine smokes when a rebuild is needed. You may only need to clean up the ring grooves and replace the rings if your bore is within specs. Sometimes running the engine regularly, along with frequent oil changes will free the rings up.
