It might be simpler to put a switch on the floorboard to energize the solenoid on your current starter. Jerry I've gathered parts (tractor switch, bellows and a big rubber button for the switch) for exactly that project when I put a military 302 GMC into my '52 GMC 3/4 ton. Will use a 12 volt solenoid starter and flywheel is 168 tooth (12 volt) from the same '57 GMC 270. The switch will just pull in the solenoid. I'll wire it through the "IGN" position on the key switch, which will be a little safer than a regular stomp starter which will turn over the engine with the key off.
