Ebay, Craig’s list, swap meets, classifieds. I have one set of Johnson solid lifters, 45 years old, USA made. Last set in my stash. So like you, I am on the prowl.
That being said, I have not heard of many issues with the new manufactured mechanical lifters. Use the recommended break in grease for the cam, use brad Penn (now Penn grade 1) brake in oil, do a proper brake in and I think you will be in pretty good shape.
Expect somewhere between 12 and 16 per lifter.
