Those marks have nothing to do with installing the starter. They are for setting the ignition timing, using the small window above the starter with the pointer in the middle of it. Align the BB with the pointer with the engine stopped, and turn the distributor housing counterclockwise so the points are just barely open. The timing can be set with either #1 or #6 cylinder in the firing position.
