HELP, please!

I'm working on my '52 6400 2 ton. Front brakes I took apart a long time ago and just now trying to put back together. I'm having a problem with the pin and spring that goes on the bottom of the shoe. I can't seem to compress it to put the clip on, it keeps shooting across the room. Is there a special tool or technique for this? I spent almost 2 hours trying to get that one on. The pictures show the pin and where it goes.Any help would be appreciated.
