One of the more satisfying do-it-yourself projects I have done was making the generator bracket work for an alternator.
It would be more difficult to explain what I did than to actually do it. Basically scrounge for parts like a length of pipe which the bolt fits in, various warshers (fabricators worth their keep say warsh), a long bolt and a nut.
It really helps if you happen to be a "materials preservationist." (My wife happens to call me something quite different.)
It would have taken most of the fun out of the project had I heard tell somewhere how to do it.
