I found a set of original 16" rims for my '54 3100. These wheels measure 4" wide.
I use new 215/85R 16 D range tires. Most tire stores have these. The manufacturer recommends no narrower than 5.5" rims, but these tires have so much sidewall, they squeeze right down, look and drive just fine.
I have about 2500 miles on mine, would do it again. The tall tires also help overcome the 411 rear gear.
