| | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 1,317 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 1,317 | Been putting quite a few over-the-road miles on my 54 pickup and have found that the ole right foot could use a little break. Also would help to keep my speed down! So I picked up an AudioVox CCS-100 cruise control kit from Amazon for under $90.00.
The kit comes with a variety of hardware that makes it "universal"....amazed at how many bikes are running it! Being that I don't have a VSS circuit I attached the included magnetic pickup to the driveshaft. I've heard horror stories about that but it turned out to be a no-brainer.
Getting the solenoid tied into my dual C/Weber setup wasn't bad....tried to make it as subtle as possible and the wiring harness just snaps together. I'd give the kit and the install a big A+. Install time 3-4 hours as I integrated the wiring into my visually-clean harnesses.
Ran through the test procedure and it DOESN'T WORK! WTF! NOTHING! Back to the drawing board!
The installation instructions didn't mention that if you are running LED brake lights you will have a problem. Seems that the solenoid has a safety feature that keeps it from engaging if your brake lights are out (open circuit w/no GROUND). In addition, I found that LED's retain some minute amount of line voltage which also confuses the solenoid circuitry. The brake light system has to be GROUNDED even when the lights aren't activated for the solenoid to engage.
Leave it to the Internet....the motorcycle guys have got it figured out. Add a relay in the solenoid circuit to the brake lights so that when the brake lights are not activated the "normally closed" relay triggers a "ground".
Well, it's all wrapped up...sure is nice to cruise along at a "controlled" speed and enjoy the ride. I'd highly recommend the unit...good "bang-for-the-buck" and if you're planning on driving your truck on the open road it will make your ride that much more enjoyable.
