I don't know about a '65 bed, but the AD series bed sides were welded at the rear to the cross sill.
If yours isn't welded, I don't see any issues with disassembling the bed for storage. If you have the room, storing it upside down on the flat tops of the bed with some dunnage underneath to keep it off the ground/floor seems like a reasonable approach.
