I had to completely disassemble mine when it started bouncing around the gauge. It wasn’t the cable, it was the lube on the gears inside. It was 70 years old, crusty, hard, and of course it was causing the needle to skip and jump all over the place, not to mention making a terrible grinding sound to boot.
Cleaned it, lubed it, and it works flawlessly now.
