I think it should get better MPG,s than that. The performer carb is a little rich out of the box. You can get a calibration kit for it & try leaner jets &/or metering rods. Check your initial timing & advance mechanisms.
How does the 290 HP. idle with an automatic? I,ve always used the 260 HP model.
