The bumpers on '52 and '53 AD's (Korean War Era) were painted a color called Anvil Grey, as were the hubcaps. Painted grilles were body color with white or ivory rear grille bars. I think most big bolt bumpers were also painted rather than chrome.

I've seen a sample of a chrome powder coated grille. Looked OK from the 50 ft distance. That might be an option for you.
