I am able to get into reverse, granny and 2nd gear with my truck but it will not find 3rd or 4th. Its not like it can't get into gear, there is no forward/back movement when searching to the right of 1/2. I saw some posts about checking the shifter to make sure its seated fine and when I opened it up it looks quite dirty. I would think the black stuff in the picture is not normal. Is there anything I can use to clean that up while its still in the truck? I saw an older post about using diesel or gas to soak it, is that viable?
Is there anything I can look/feel for from the top for a clue as to why 3rd and 4th have disappeared? I drained the oil and did not feel any bits of metal in the drain pan.
