Mike - if I made it wide enough to cover the outside tires it would have been wider than the cab in front. I laid out the bed that way at first and I really didn't like the look. I live in Phoenix and this truck will be on pavement 99% of the time... so not a ton of rocks to kick up. I figured I'd take the gamble and put my mirrors at risk in order to have the bed the size I liked.
If rocks end up being a problem, I can always build some fenders later on.
