sorry to hear about your leak, normal threads don't seal by design, so if a bolt going into any liquid i put some permatex onto it first.
when i replaced my water pump i put a slick of that stuff everywhere, i don't think there is a particular reason not to, except it makes it more difficult to remove in the future
perhaps there is other reasons, but mine works fine with goop
