If your previous carb was very rich the excess fuel may still be in the engine & exhaust system. I f you have A PCV sytem it can be pulling fumes out of the crankcase. Your plugs are probably carboned up but can be cleaned. I use one of the cheapy spark plug sand blasters. If you have compressed air available it can save buying new plugs when they get carboned up which is real easy with todays gas.
