Will be adding this to my article on W-1 carbs, but wanted to get it out here:
This is maybe the rarest, certainly in the top 3, of the Carter type W-1 carburetors, tag number 585s for WWII military trucks.
Carter says Chevrolet 235 and 270 CID engines. Is the 270 CID right, or is the 270 CID a GMC engine?
Technically, the finish on this carburetor is incorrect; as Carter sprayed the entire carburetor with semi-gloss black paint for the military.
But I wanted to show details, and I am technologically challenged in trying to take detailed digital pictures with an iphone. I did very well with my old Canon 35mm SLR, but unable to get film developed locally anymore, so cannot easily use it. I bought one of the electronic whizbang digital cameras, but after trying it out, quite obvious this thing was designed for someone with a post-doctorate in electronics

and that is not me!
So, pretend that you are looking at pictures which are totally black

There are many obvious differences from the non-military W-1 carbs; the most obvious being the airhorn for a bolt on air cleaner, the non-machined boss where an 1/8th pipe tap would normally be present for vacuum advance, and the rubber boot covering the pump/metering rod operating rod.
Upon closely inspection, one finds that the boot is actually a dust seal for the area above the bowl cover. Other dust seals are: throttle shaft bearing surfaces, choke shaft bearing surfaces, and the idle mixture control screw. If one looks closely in the pictures (picture 3), one can see a flat metal washer between the idle mixture screw tension spring and the casting. Not visible is a fiber washer between the metal washer and the casting. The metal washer is present to protect the fiber washer from the spring.
So below (I hope) are pictures:
