I'm pretty sure 63 was the first year for alternators, the ones with a 4-connector external regulator. Those things are a royal pain in the butt to work with. Unless you're building something that's supposed to look factory original, a 10-SI internal regulated alternator from the middle 1970's or newer would be a much better choice, reliability-wise.
