Carl's suggestion is a good one as well. I have a roll of sticky anti-slip that I have used for to top of my boat trailer tongue, etc. That would work for your step area. I just looked at it, thinking it was a 3M product, but there's no marking on it. I have no idea where I got it, it's been so long ago.
