The point load on the small lifting pad isn't really an issue. Putting a loose steel pad would probably not be a good idea, as it increases the chance of the axle slipping off the jack. The more concerning thing would be bending load on the axle. That being said, I really doubt that it would hurt the axle, just not a really good idea. I would jack up one side at a time and put a jack stand underneath.
