If this ever happens again, remove the clevis pins from the levers on the parking brake cross bar. This will release the parking brake cables and rule out the parking brake as the issue. While the cables are disconnected, pull on them to see if they will pull out and return as designed.
Then do what Ed says. He is always right. (I have never witnessed him being challenged on his advice.)
