the soft iron is meant to be saturated, you cannot over magnetize it
so what you do is get a strong magnet and stick it on for a couple hours and go do something else
then come back and pull the magnet off in a clean motion Now you've done it. You've let the cat out of the bag and ruined the livelihood of numerous speedo builders.
