I just checked a couple filters i have on the shelf. If yours is an AC filter/housing, they don't seem to use the spring that Jerry mentions. The filter is a press-in fit, from what I can tell.

On the other hand, if it's a Durex-Moraine filter/housing (which was what was commonly installed as an option in the early '50's) or an old Carter aftermarket filter, then it should have a cone-shaped spring between the bowl and filter just as Jerry says. See the image of the old brochure, attached. You can see the spring in the Durex filter illustration.
