The front panel has a very long rod that runs the entire length of the top tube roll. In order to stop it from spinning, have a pal hold a wrench on one side while you remove the other side’s nut.
I’ve never heard of the factory welding the actual tailgate in. However, the stake pockets, the vertical pieces on the box sides, have been known to be be welded to the rear cross sill to keep the box square and rigid.
