I would have bet money that you rolled the letters on. That's the only way to get that kind of results.
I am guessing they were originally done with a roller wide enough to cover the whole width of the plates.
The issue with rolling the entire width of used plates is finding a way to force them to lay perfectly flat so that single swipe of the roller will cover everything.
