Boy am I feeling lucky. I've never torqued a bell housing onto an engine in 55 years of backyard/barn monkey wrenching and have had no problems. I have replaced bell housings for others that had ears broken off and/or cracked. Too much torque or not enough?

Yes.........we are NOT working on the bell housing on the space shuttle.
Cracked causes .........misaligned, missing dowel pins or tightened when not seated against the block?
