Gord, do what I do. Adjust the door striker outboard of the current position so that it will close without slamming, yet still compresses the seal somewhat. The door edge will be slightly proud of the door opening at the rear. That's OK for now.
Over time, the rubber will lay down and behave, then you can move the striker inboard and the door will close without slamming, and be flush with the door opening.
This has worked for me every time.
