While having lunch I was pondering this some more and now think that I have it wrong. I've been thinking that the center moulding piece acts as a spacer and would "lift" my upper grill if installed. After some more thought and looking at your pictures it appears that this piece is actually more like a garnish molding and won't affect the alignment at all.
Going to ride the Harley now to clear my head.
