A simple Ohm's Law calculation tells me that before such things as inductive reactance get figured into the mix the 1.6 Ohm coil will flow 7.5 amps at 12 volts- - - -WAY too much for a set of points to handle. At a a normal charging system voltage of 14.5, the coil will flow just over 9 amps and the points will be crispy critters in a matter of minutes. The 3.6 Ohm coil will flow 3.3 amps at startup, and 4.3 amps during normal running- - - -much better, since the max a set of points is supposed to carry is 5 amps.

There are two types of Pertronix ignition systems- - - -the failed ones, and the ones that are going to fail soon.
