For what it is worth, my alternator is a run of the mill SI about 60 amps or so. I drove 600 miles today, AC on, headlights, electric fuel pump, stereo blasting over the wind noise, cruise control, lockup converter, etc. The ammeter never indicated discharge. Agreed, 100 amp alternator would be overkill and maybe dangerous.
