Here's what I was referring to. Could be mounted to be actuated by the original linkage or some other method, But I like your idea of a push type switch. I doubt an original starter would spin even a 4BTA diesel over fast enough to start it, so a relay is a must to isolate the switch to use a strong enough starter motor.
