The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts 1948 4400 engine tranny combo advice

My well worn original 283 and SM420 4 speed have plenty of torque for my '57 two ton, of course that's with the 6.17 single speed rear end but I would think a 6.0 would do very well. There were lots of ton and a half trucks in the '70's with 350's. Most of the medium duty's that I drove had 366 and 427's until we switched to Cat, Detroit, IH. If I was building a truck I wouldn't even think about an automatic just 'cause I'm old-school and like rowing the gears, the more the better.
