They were the ugliest, hardest to work with pieces of "fertilizer" anyone operating a tire changing machine ever had to deal with. At least that was my impression when I started working in service stations back in the early 1960's. The people who used them were a bunch of cheapskates too stingy to buy real whitewalls, also! After a few miles, they had a nasty habit of sticking out an inch or so away from the sidewall.
