I have the same hole in my '50. Figure it's a drain plug, probably if the gas tank develops a big leak (the Captain has turned on the NO SMOKING sign!)
I've always thought to Rhinoline under the seat, plug up the hole and use it as a ice cooler!! Keep your buns cool in the hot Texas heat!
