Use a 3/8-16 tap to chase the threads. Also, be sure the jackscrew on the puller is small enough to pass through the hole in the balancer and actually bear against the front of the crankshaft snout. If the end of the jackscrew is bigger than 3/4" in diameter it will probably jam against the balancer hub without pushing on the crank.
