Hi Mike -
That is a good question. I was just looking at the same rain rail on my 55 the other day and I was wondering how I was going to straighten mine out.
I am not an experienced enough person to know if you could remove it but I think it would look good without it.
Hopefully someone will come along and answer this question who knows what is going on.
