a 10-bolt or 12-bolt rear end normally refer to the # of bolts on the ring gear. (corporate 10-bolt, 12-bolt, or 14-bolt rear end.)

It can also refer to the # of lug nuts. 8 bolt is normally a 3/4 ton. 10 bolt would be the 1 1/2 or 2-ton. (I believe 1956, Chevrolet went to the 6-bolt "BUDD" pattern on the 2-ton axles.
