You know, as far as originality is concerned, that domed top to the shifter looks different from the one on my '49. I agree with bartamos in that each 'slop' of every joint is an addition problem, the whole is equal to the sum of all the slops. I replaced the rods with one's I fashioned myself using heim joints that attach to the shifter arms at the transmission. I have very positive shifts and ended up decreasing the throw which makes driving the 3 on the tree very pleasurable.
By fashioning my own rods I did away with the 'bell crank' pivot on the side of the bell housing. In doing so I eliminated three points of slop.
