Clamp a pair of vise grips on a rocker arm with the valve fully closed, and give it a firm pull toward the adjuster, not the valve, for about 5 minutes. If the clearance gradually increases until it's about 1/8", you've got hydraulic lifters. Don't worry about the excessive clearance, the lifter wil pump up again as soon as the engine is started.
