Sitting still, engine running, a grind is not normal in a non-syncro'ed transmission (the 3 speed in my 59 never did it). Like Jerry points out, there is some minor clutch drag. Is the grind significant? If your transmission shifts smooth with the engine off, I'd discount a tranny issue.
