the front face of the block should be just behind the front cross member where the original front mounts were
as seen here .... sets the fan about 1/2" from the rad and leaves just enough clearance from the firewall for the distributor - if you've got the HEI, you'll need to have the engine as far forward as you can get it for enough clearance
