In the mid-1930's in Nashville Tennessee my grandparents bought Chevy dual wheel cab/chassis rigs and built their own stepside beds to haul ice. They were designed to carry several 250-lb. blocks of bulk ice in a long, narrow bed with straw between them for insulation. The ice was cut off into 25 or 50-lb. chunks to stock the household or commercial ice boxes that were common back then before most households had refrigerators. They had another fleet of trucks that hauled coal on a seasonal basis, for the same customers who used their ice year-round.
