I installed a t-5 on my 54 several years ago, I didn't need an adapter, just did the modifications that Wrenchbender mentioned. I shorten the input shaft, opened up the mounting holes to 1/2 inch and cut the splines back on the input shaft using a Dremel with a couple of cutoff discs mounted back to back to get the correct spine width.
