I use the cheapest, rattle can primer that I can find. Under a buck at WalMart. I just painted my Honda car using about 8 cans of cheap primer. The only problem that I see with it is that you can't build it up in nice wide swatches like you can with spray gun primer. It makes it harder to get the panel perfectly smooth.
