I think they woulda been black originally Fred, and you may have hit on a good use for that stuff - I don't like it in truck beds, but I'd think it might be good on the boards - keep'em from being slippery as you say, and I don't think it would get scratched up as easy as paint - be a guinea-pig for us, and report on how it works!
