I couldn't find my original post, so here we go.
Background: Back in March I bought a '49 1ton dually w/ flatbed. I had found some cool safety reflectors in the truck. I hadn't moved it from seller's place yet. I drive over the road, so only home one weekend per month.
Now: I moved it to a storage lot closer to home. The guy working there is cool & has let me go in and work on the truck. The day after moving it, I went back and installed the rear window with new rubber I had ordered. That only took 2 hours.Today I took a set of 18" dually wheels I bought off a '62 C30 out & tossed on the bed. Out of the 6, only 2 wheels are in great shape with only one holding air. And it had cords showing. The others are rusted with bad tires. Might be usable as spares. Maybe I'll find some better ones since nobody wants them on their trucks.
It turns out that the 216 is locked up. I pulled the starter & the flywheel cover, but no luck. It's either crap in cylinders or broken rod. It will turn just slightly back & forth. Last time I had this problem with different truck, it turned out to be a wasps nest. Then it would turn most of a revolution and then back most of the way. So I'm leaning toward rod. I forgot a drain pan, so I couldn't take oil pan off. I took off the valve cover and it was unbelievably clean like a new engine. Never can tell.
That's it for now. I have a couple more days off. Might go back and pull pan. Future plans are to restore as much as possible. No axle swaps, no brake swap, & no 12V. Just '49 Chevy.
Oh, I was crawling around under Morgan (that's his name since I bought him in Ft. Morgan) and saw that the steering linkage would be a great swap for my '49 1/2 ton if it will fit. Will take tape measure next trip. I think the springs in the links leads to bump steer. I will wait to see if new springs & shackles cures it first.
