Well it appears I made an assumption when I saw the wear on the ring gear. I have a 168 tooth ring gear and a 9 tooth starter so what I must be seeing is 60+years of wear on the ring gear. It engages and starts just fine so I will just run with it for now. At least I know where I stand with it going forward!
