Well, I'm putting an antenna on the side of my truck. The PO had an electric antenna on the top cowl, but it had to be down when I opened the hood (or the hood would bust the antenna) -- great planning there, eh? And also, the motor was visible under the dash, and if that wasn't bad enough, water was coming in all the time.
Anyway, I like the way the side mounted antennas look, so I guess I'll just do my thing. My truck is a hotrod, so it doesn't really matter ... but I do prefer maintaining an original look to my truck as much as possible.
