I once had a vehicle where the previous owner sealed the fuel tank sending unit with silicone sealant.
The fuel dissolved the silicone into a gel.
The gel made it into the fuel filter and restricted the fuel flow.
The engine ran good up to about 55 mph then would die, until I let up on the gas pedal, then it would starting running again.
It was like the engine had a governor.
