"Way back when" would have to be before the 216 was introduced. All the 216/235 crankshafts I've seen only have a smooth surface at the back of the crank for the oil seal to ride and the flywheel to mount, no slinger. I believe some of the earlier engines might have had a slinger and a reverse-helix groove to transfer oil back into the crankcase instead of a seal.
